SILVER STARS GLEAM AT SOUTHERN LIGHTS CULINARY COMPETITION
Edgewater’s apprentice chef, Janez Simonka scooped four awards at the Southern Lights Salon Culinaire Competition, held in Invercargill last weekend.
Janez was awarded two silver medals and two bronze medals for his entries into four different categories.
For the Beef Dish category he created a beef sirloin dish accompanied by a field mushroom stack and served with béarnaise paint and fondant potatoes. “It was pretty close for Janez as he was only 1.5 points off gold in this category”, according to Executive Chef, Neil Ward.
In the other category, Seafood Mystery Box, he devised an Asian-themed orange roughy.
Not content with two silvers, Janez also picked up two bronze medals for in the Chocolate Fantasy section – a Trio of Chocolate was his entry and in the Salmon category - semi-cured smoked salmon.
“We were really pleased with Janez performance as he was up against some very experienced chefs. It was his first competition and a great learning experience. He is looking forward to competing in the nationals in Auckland in the near future”, add Neil.
According to General Manager, Mr Leigh Stock, “Janez joined us almost two years ago and it’s great to see him achieve these great successes amongst his peers. It’s important for Edgewater to nurture talent and I’m sure Janez will have a bright future.”
The competition was hosted by the Southern Institute of Technology’s School of Hospitality.
