Winter Wonderland: My Skiing Escape in Wanaka

When the crisp winter air fills my lungs and the snow-capped mountains of Wanaka beckon, I can't help but get excited about the  Wanaka winter ski season. This coming season (2025) there are new ski experiences awaiting with the opening of the Soho Basin.

Cardrona Alpine Resort has been my go-to playground. The runs here are spectacular, offering something for every skill level. From gentle slopes for beginners to challenging terrain for advanced skiers, it's a winter sports haven that never disappoints. There is 465 ha of terrain at Cardrona.  Snowboarders relish the four terrain parks, two half pipes and a gravity cross course. Cardrona is due to open on 14 June, 2025.

Just when I thought the skiing options couldn't get more exciting, I learned about the upcoming Soho Basin, set to open in 2025. Accessible from Cardrona, it promises to add even more variety to the already impressive skiing landscape, serving up another 150 ha of runs.

Treble Cone has been another highlight of my winter adventures. Known for its challenging terrain and breathtaking views, it's a must-visit for serious skiers. Did you know it is the largest ski area in the South Island?  Steep runs and incredible vistas of Lake Wanaka make every descent an unforgettable experience. Treble Cone is aiming for an opening date of 28 June, 2025.

For those seeking a different skiing experience, Snow Farm offers a unique Nordic skiing adventure. As New Zealand's only Nordic ski area, it provides a completely different approach to winter sports, with cross-country skiing and beautiful winter landscapes. Planning to open 21 June, 2025.

After a day of conquering the slopes, returning to Edgewater is like finding a warm embrace. The new premium (refurbished) guest rooms are a winter sanctuary – individually controlled air conditioning, double-glazed windows, and improved insulation ensure ultimate comfort. The new energy-efficient hot water system is just the cherry on top.

The après-ski experience at Edgewater is nothing short of magical. The bar and restaurant offer the perfect place to unwind, share stories of the day's adventures, and enjoy some well-deserved refreshments. And when the muscles are feeling the day's exertions the on-site spa and sauna are absolute game-changers. There's nothing quite like soaking away the day's aches while reminiscing about those perfect powder runs.

Wanaka in winter is more than just a destination – it's a complete winter experience that captures the heart of every snow enthusiast – me included!
